On Friday, May 30, Matt Berninger took his current solo run to New York’s Webster Hall to support his latest full-length drop, Get Sunk, which arrived the same day as a concert. As a result, the artist submitted each track from the 2025 LP into his setlist. In addition to honoring his most recent collection of new music, the National frontman welcomed a trio of guests, including bandmate Scott Devendorf, The Walkman’s Walter Martin, and longtime collaborator/ Nancy contributor, Mike Brewer.

The night began with a trio of pulls from Get Sunk, “No Love,” “Frozen Oranges,” and “Breaking Into Acting” before Martin’s arrival on “Distant Axis,” an inclusion from Berninger’s solo debut, Serpentine Prison, which the guest originally contributed to. Thoughtfully and sans guest, Berninger continued to refer to his 2020 release, with the arrival of its title track, and a continuation of features off that set, considering its COVID delivery, the current tour cycle has functioned as an opportunity for Berninger to also support his initial solo collection on the road.

Berninger’s bandmate/ bassist in the National, Devendorf, helped usher in a debut off Serpentine Prison, “My Eyes Are T-Shirts,” a song he contributed to in the studio. Separating the onset of the next guest arrival were “One More Second” and “Silver Jeep,” preceded by Brewer’s contribution on “Little By Little.” Brewer and Berninger’s history extends back to their Nancy days, the precursor to National.

Following the final sit-in, Berninger pulled off his second-ever live performance of the First Two Pages of Frankenstein cut, the Taylor Swift-featured “The Alcott,” a track the originating band has never played live. Before ending the night, the artist slipped in a cover of New Order’s “Blue Monday” before finding an exit after “Inland Ocean.”

During last night’s latest appearance in Norwalk, Conn., Brewer returned, this time, Berninger called him “his Taylor Swift” before “Little by Little” and the follow-up, “Times of Difficulty.”
