The term “heavy metal” was first used to describe the sound of music by the British weekly newspaper, The New Musical Express, in a November 1970 review of the band Black Sabbath’s debut album. It was meant to be derogatory, but the band members embraced the label.
The oldest known song is the Sumerian hymn titled ‘Hurrian Cult Song,’ which dates back to around 1400 B.C. The written version of the song was discovered on a clay tablet in Syria in 1952.
