Over the weekend, on Dec. 8 and 9, moe. brought their version of holiday cheer to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. In line with the short days and string lights adding warmth to the streets, they chose a festive collection of songs, many from their holiday album Season’s Greetings From moe. which was released back in 2002.
Friday night’s performance started with a set from the Boston-based jamband Neighbor, who dropped their self-titled debut album earlier this year. After the openers, moe. began their night with “Deep This Time,” which went into “Wormwood,” which then transitioned into “Not Coming Down.” The band then busted out their first Christmas song of the night with “Together At Christmas,” a tune last played in 2018. Next, the band played a song by keyboardist Nate Wilson, “In Stride,” before ending their first set with a performance of “Rise” that transitioned to “Recreational Chemistry,” which featured Lyle Brewer from Neighbor on guitar.
moe. took the stage for the second time, starting with a performance of “Timmy Tucker.” They then played a new song from Al Schiner, “Tomorrow is Another Day.” Next, the band performed “Silver Sun,” a tune initially made for moe.’s The Electric Lemoe.nade Acid Test, a Halloween event hosted in 2010. This song flowed into “Bat Country,” a tune by Rob Derhak that debuted in October. To end the night, the band finished with “McBain” moving into “Brent Black,” as moe. finished their second set of the evening. For an encore, the band played “Bearsong” before ending on a holiday bust-out of “We’re A Couple Of Misfits.”
Midnight North opened the show Saturday night and moe. kicked off their second night with their version of “Oh Hanukkah,” a traditional song the band hadn’t played since 2016. Next, the band played “Yellow Tigers” and the instrumental song “Jazz Cigarette.” The band from Buffalo then played “Buster,” one of their most played songs, which transitioned into “Skating,” a Vince Guaraldi tune the band had never played before. The classic holiday song was then used to transition into another Guaraldi tune, “Linus and Lucy,” a song that is included on moe.’s aforementioned holiday album. Next, the band seemed to focus on large cities for a few songs when they played “New York City” and “ATL.” The first set ended with a bust out of “Cassidy,” a song that hadn’t been played since 2003 and featured Graham Lesh on lead vocals and guitar.
Their second set started with a “Plane Crash” and “Four” before the band played “Ups and Downs” from Derhak’s 2022 solo album. Afterwards, moe. played the Led Zeppelin song “No Quarter,” which was followed up by “George.” The night ended with the band playing a run of some of their most familiar songs, starting with “Mar-Dema” which transitioned into “Tubing The River Styx” and ended on “The Pit.” For an encore, moe. began with a bust-out of the holiday classic “Blue Christmas” before they ended their two-night run with “Downward Facing Dog.”
moe. will end their year with a New Year’s Eve run on Dec. 30 and 31 at the Kodak Center in Rochester, N.Y. For tickets, more show dates and information, check the band’s website here.
