Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts Revive “I’m The Ocean” for First Time on Love Earth Tour

On Tuesday, August 19, Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts delivered their second night of music on the Budweiser Stage in Toronto. During the concert, which occurred in Young’s hometown, the bandleader continued his current trend of reviving personal material during the first half of the performance, carving a slot for a tour debut, and reintroducing a select song into the mix. Resuming the motif, Young led the band through the first “I’m The Ocean” since the group’s enthusiastic embrace of their 2024 run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. 

In preparation for Tuesday’s return to the 1995 Mirror Ball feature, Young alongside Spooner Oldham (Farfisa organ), Micah Nelson (guitar, vocals), Corey McCormick (bass, vocals), and Anthony LoGerfo (drums) conjured “Ambulance Blues” before throwing it back to 1969’s Everybody Knows This is No Where cut, “Cowgirl in the Sand.” From purple words on a grey background, the band moved to their first live performance of “I’m The Ocean,” since Sept. 24, 2024. 

“I’m The Ocean,” is a relatively rare feature of Young’s concerts. It debuted on June 7, 1995, during a Seattle co-bill with regional stalwarts Pearl Jam, and performed with mild regularity its first year, before being shelved until 1997’s H.O.R.D.E. Festival gigs with Crazy Horse. Between 1997 and 2023, the track was not considered, only reappearing for the first time on July 1, 2023, during Young’s solo gig at The Ford in Los Angeles. 

The track continued to turn up in setlists the year of its return [2023], and played on a handful of occasions in 2024. Ultimately, Tuesday’s return represented the first performance of “I’m The Ocean” during the Love Earth Tour.
