Neil Young Leaves X Following Musk’s Antisemitic Sentiments

Two years after Neil Young took his music off Spotify following COVID-19 vaccine misinformation by Joe Rogan on the platform, the artist has once again used his absence from a digital platform as a form of protest, this time stepping off X due to Elon Musk’s antisemitic sentiments. The antisemitic comments from tech-billionaire came when he responded to a post that stated Western Jews push “dialectical hatred against whites,” saying, “You have said the actual truth.”

“We are stopping all use of X that we can control,” Young wrote in the Neil Young Archives. “For reasons that should be obvious to the richest man on Earth, we are taking this action against his company.”

He continued to address his “many Palestinian friends” and “many Jewish friends,” writing, “We do need to start over in the present and release our terrible connections to the past. As bad as they are, they need to be forgotten so we can be free to move on in life together, all humanity focused on saving our planet for future generations of all people.”

Young’s protest against digital platforms like Spotify has encouraged others to step up for their beliefs and follow suit, with Joni Mitchel also removing her music from Spotify. The musician has also left Facebook after he saw it spreading misinformation.

Since Musk’s response to the post, many advertisers on the website pulled their ads after seeing their campaigns next to antisemitic content. The advertisers include Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Comcast, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery and more. Since buying the site in 2022 it has lost $25 billion in value falling from $44 billion to $19.
