Nell & The Flaming Lips Announce New Album, Share Single “The Ship Song”

Nell & The Flaming Lips have announced the release of their new LP, Where the Viaduct Looms, which will release on Nov. 26. The LP is made up of nine Nick Cave covers with instrumentation and production by The Flaming Lips and instrumentation and vocals by 14-year-old Nell Smith.

The wholesome and wild story begins with Smith moving to Canada, and first meeting Wayne Coyne at just 12 at The Flaming Lips show at the Sled Island Festival in Calgary with her family in 2018 with her family. She had already attended several Lips shows and was a regular at the front of the crowd, dressed in a colorful parrot costume and screaming out the band’s songs word for word. Coyne soon noticed and sang a David Bowie cover directing to her, and Smith sang every word back. A musical bond formed, and Smith began to write her own songs.

After a planned trip to record with the band was canceled due to COVID-19, Coyne asked Smith to record some Nick Cave Songs and email them to the band in Oklahoma. He chose Nick Cave because Smith didn’t know who he was and wouldn’t have any preconceived notions of how to recreate the songs. The first track they laid down was a cover of “Girl In Amber.” Coyne commented on the collaboration in a press release, “It’s always great to meet excited, young creative people. With Nell, we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while and see if we could get things going. It was a great way to connect with her and help harness her cool attitude to making music.”

Where the Viaduct Looms was masted by Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios. In conjunction with the album’s release date, Nell & The Flaming Lips shared a video of their cover of “The Ship Song.”
