Nicki Minaj Blames Jay-Z for Album Cancellation—Old Tidal Beef Looms Large

Nicki Minaj says she’s cancelling her new album, and possibly quitting music altogether, blaming Jay-Z due to a long-running beef.
Nicki Minaj has said she’s cancelled her sixth studio album, which was due for release in March. The “Starships” rapper implied she would be retiring from music altogether in a message on social media in which she laid the blame on Jay-Z.
“Ok I’m not going to put out the album anymore,” wrote Nicki. “No more music. Hope you’re happy now [Jay-Z]. Bye, Barbz. Love you for life.”
Shortly before that post, she wrote about unspecified people who oppose her. “They don’t want me to put out music. Me winning makes them feel like they lost. They’re right. However, it didn’t have to be this way. Lots of people part ways in business. They know how successful my next album is going to be. Tried to sign [Lil] Wayne, Drake, me.”
“So they keep wanting to take or stop my money simply because narcissists believe what you work hard for belongs to them,” she continued. “Fuming because they can’t siphon anymore energy, money, blessings, love, grace, joy, PEACE… the culture. No successful tours. Just vibes & payola. CasiNO.”
She tagged Jay-Z in another post in her rant, which further solidifies that Minaj is referring to her strained relationship with the media and business mogul.
Earlier this year, she claimed he owes her $200 million for her equity in music streaming platform Tidal, which he founded. According to Nicki, she was initially given a 3% stake in Tidal when it launched in 2015, but was offered only $1 million for her share of the company when it was sold to Jack Dorsey’s Square for $302 million in 2021.
Nicki Minaj has also been repeatedly calling out Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, who was pardoned for decades-old drug charges by President Trump in 2021. Minaj claims that Perez is behind tabloid reports that Nicki and her husband are being forced to sell her California home to pay $500,000 to a security guard over an alleged altercation.
In addition to her bouts with Roc Nation, Nicki has been involved in a heavily reignited rivalry with Cardi B. But whether the “Anaconda” rapper will actually cancel her forthcoming album remains to be seen. Her last album was 2023’s Pink Friday 2, which was a welcome return to form for the artist.
