Puerto Rican artist Ozuna accepted the Extraordinary Evolution Award during the sixth edition of the Latin American Music Awards on Thursday (April 15).

Donning a blue jumpsuit, aviators and a 1,000-watt smile, the honoree performed a medley of his hits — old and new — including “Se Preparo,” “Una Vaina Loca” and “Dile Que Tu Me Quieres.” In a tender surprise moment, Ozuna was presented the award by his grandmother. The two remained in a tearful embrace as the singer delivered his acceptance speech, first and foremost thanking his grandmother, who he referred to as his “mother” and his “everything.”

“This angel taught me…that we were born to fight,” Ozuna said.

With seven Latin AMAs nominations this year — including artist of the year and collaboration of the year — the “Caramelo” singer was honored for his achievements as an artist who has demonstrated change and accelerated growth to reach the pinnacle of success in a short period of time. Previous artists who have been honored with this award include Becky G (2019) and Maluma (2018).

Hosted by Mexican actress Jacqueline Bracamontes, the 2021 Latin AMAs — live from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida — featured performances from Ozuna, Maluma, Camilo, Los Dos Carnales, and Eslabon Armado, among others.
