Palm Springs has formally announced its second studio album, entitled Turning Yr Back On The Dolphin. The eight-track album is set for release next month on Friday, September 26th via Poison City Records. It marks the project’s first full-length LP of new material since 2018’s Palm Springs & Friends, as well as its first new release overall since the fittingly-titled compilation A Collection Of Songs from 2021. Project figurehead Erica Dunn – also of the bands Tropical Fuck Storm and Mod Con – recorded the album with fellow Melbourne musician Michael Beach, directly to tape.

To coincide with the album’s announcement, the project has shared the lead single ‘Infinity 69’. “This song maps an existential crisis under the arch of Hadrian and contemplates obsession, the boundaries of the time/space continuum, [and] how to please the nice ghosties,” said Dunn in a statement shared to social media. “[It] is also a tip of my feeble hat to Marguerite Yourcenar.” An animated music video has been shared for the song, created anonymous UK-based animator Nespy 5Euro – who worked with Tropical Fuck Storm earlier this year on the ‘Bloodsport’ music video.

Dunn went on to note in press materials for the album that Dolphin touches on a range of subject matters, describing it as “an Alice-through-the-looking-glass journey”. “Turning Yr Back On The Dolphin pulls together a tangle of threads that represent seven years of reflection and rumination,” she wrote. “[It] catalogues nihilism vs. wonderment, the torture and reward of unshackling from a toxic relationship and the weight of wading through the waters of modernity as we know it.”

Tropical Fuck Storm are set to return to the road in November for a national tour in support of their most recent album, Fairyland Codex, which was released back in June. The aforementioned Michael Beach will serve as support for most of the shows. Mod Con, meanwhile, performed at Melbourne’s Croxton Bandroom in May as part of the reunion shows for The Drones, with Dunn’s TFS bandmates Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin. Paul & Dan Kelly, Don Walker and The Nation Blue also played.

Turning Yr Back On The Dolphin can be pre-ordered physically on vinyl via the Poison City Estore by clicking here, and can be pre-ordered digitally by visiting the Palm Springs Bandcamp page here.
