Play on the Plains 2024: King Gizzard, Baker Boy, Alex Lahey + More

Play on the Plains is set to return to the Riverina border town of Deniliquin (home of the Deni Ute Muster) in March 2024. It will be headlined by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, marking their first time playing in the area and their first announced Australian show since Splendour In The Grass in July 2023.

Also on the bill are rapper Baker Boy, indie-rock singer-songwriter Alex Lahey and Melbourne indie-dance outfit Northeast Party House. Psych-rock band The Carp Factory – who are based in Melbourne but originally from Deniliquin – will open the festival’s main stage.

The festival’s B-stage will see local acts performing as part of a battle-of-the-bands. There will be three categories of competition: senior band, junior band (for primary school-aged kids) and solo artist. The winner in the senior band category will open the festival’s main stage in 2025.

“We are thrilled to be back for 2024,” said the festival’s general manager Vicky Lowry in a statement. “Play on the Plains was created for a younger audience through to families, bringing them all together to experience the best of our young Australian talent.”

The festival was intended to run in March 2023, headlined by Jessica Mauboy and also featuring King Stingray. It was cancelled a month out, however, due to low ticket sales. “It is not viable for the organisation to continue and suffer a financial loss,” a statement from the festival read at the time. Lahey, Northeast Party House and The Carp Factory were all set to perform.
