Lilith Fair cancelled

Musical performances slated to take place at the premiere of Disney’s Lilith Fair documentary have been abruptly cancelled per Sarah McLachlan.

The fallout from last week’s suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel continues with the cancellation of the musical performances scheduled to take place last night at the premiere of the documentary, Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery.

The cancellation comes in a move of solidarity to support free speech, following Disney’s suspension of Kimmel for his remarks after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Disney is the parent company of the documentary’s distributor, ABC News Studios.

After station owners Nexstar and Sinclair said they would not be airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the wake of those remarks, Disney decided to suspend Kimmel indefinitely. The company has faced backlash from Hollywood figureheads, as well as current and veteran late-night hosts, politicians, and the public.

“Please note this event will no longer be hosting a red carpet,” reads an email sent to members of the press over the weekend. “We appreciate your willingness to attend and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

“While the previously scheduled musical performances will not take place, we invite you to stay for a reception following the screening to celebrate the documentary,” said organizers on Sunday.

At the premiere, Lilith Fair co-founder and musician Sarah McLachlan, who also appears in the documentary, announced the cancellation of the scheduled performances in a move of solidarity to support free speech. Notably, she was scheduled to appear as a guest on Kimmel’s show on Tuesday, before the suspension.

“It’s a gift for all of us to see [this film], but also I’ve grappled with being here tonight and around what to say about the present situation that we are all faced with—the stark [contrast] to the many advances we’ve made watching the insidious erosion of women’s rights, of trans and queer rights, the muzzling of free speech,” said McLachlan.

“If Lilith taught me anything, it taught me there is a great strength in coming together to lift each other up instead of tearing each other down,” she continued. “So I really hope this documentary inspires everyone to continue to try and create positive change in your communities, to keep lifting each other up, keep championing the causes you believe in with kindness and empathy, because ultimately we’re all in this together.”

Last week, Sarah McLachlan also announced her Better Broken Tour, in support of her highly anticipated album of the same name, which released on Friday via Concord Records.

The fall tour will see McLachlan perform nine shows in major U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, in November. Tickets are available starting tomorrow, September 23, with various presales, including one for Citi cardmembers and Verizon customers. The general onsale begins Friday, September 26, at 10 AM local time.
