Reverse Engineer Jane Wong Spots Spotify ‘SongDNA’ Feature—Spotify Quickly Updates App To Remove References

Noted reverse engineer Jane Wong has discovered Spotify is working on a credits feature dubbed ‘SongDNA.’ The feature will allow users to discover who worked on their favorite songs by browsing the song credits including writers, collaborators, vocalists, engineers, lyricists, producers, composers, and others. Spotify has long lagged behind Tidal in featuring credits metadata in this manner.
Jane Wong showed off several screenshots of the SongDNA feature and how it would appear inside the Spotify app. The feature appears to bring a new visual experience allowing the user to browse through song credits and see how creators are connected and which other songs they’ve worked on.
Her example showcases the artist Rei Ami and her work on the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ soundtrack—showcasing her work on other tracks outside of the movie. Interactive credits have been a huge selling point for Tidal, which also lets you explore contributors on songs in a similar manner. The addition could also be useful for music industry professionals who are seeking a specific sound to see all collaborators who work behind the scenes.
Shortly after Wong revealed the feature in development, she said the app was updated to remove reverences to SongDNA. So it’s unclear when this leaked feature will come to light—if at all. Spotify is constantly testing new features in the backend and many of them don’t make it to live releases. But this seems like something that Spotify could market to superfans and those interested as part of its super premium tier offering.
One noted feature that never saw the light of day is algorithmic playlist tweaks that users can make. Spotify experimented with allowing users to filter alternative versions of tracks—acoustic, karaoke, or live recordings—while continuing to include remixes. The altered filtering policy for the Release Radar playlist was tested on select user groups, but never saw widespread release on the platform.
Spotify’s secretive A/B testing remains core to its platform evolution. Teams create ideas and test them on small groups of users before they decide whether to implement the feature widely on the Spotify platform. Some of these features appear for just weeks and disappear based on feedback, while others linger for months before being retired. Based on Spotify’s quick update, it appears they don’t want more information about SongDNA leaking at the moment.
