Rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced in Romania to nine months in prison for possession of drugs for personal use according to a decision made by the Constanța Court of Appeal.

The decision comes after the court upheld the appeal filed by DIICOT—Constanța Territorial Service, which had only imposed a criminal fine of 3,000 lei previously. According to court minutes, the Court of Appeal decided to sentence the artist to nine months in prison, based on Law #143/2000, which is unlawful possession of dangerous drugs for personal use. This decision is final according to Romanian law.

Wiz Khalifa was briefly detained and later released without being remanded in custody in 2024. The case does not involve any trafficking offenses, but exclusive revolves around the possession of drugs for personal use. That law carries a sentencing time ranging from three months to 2 years in prison or a fine. While drugs have been decriminalized in some European countries like Portugal, the Netherlands and Germany, Romania remains one of the European coutnries with strict drug laws.

While Wiz Khalifa was sentenced to prison in Romania today, the rapper has safely returned to the United States. It’s unclear if Romania will try to force his extradition from the United States. Speaking at the time of the offense, Wiz said: “I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage.”

The rapper was live on Twitch yesterday and also made a cameo at Gunna’s concert in Los Angeles, according to Rolling Stone.

The situation may play out like A$AP Rocky’s issue with Sweden after the rapper was arrested in 2019. Formal charges were brought and A$AP Rocky was convicted with a maximum penalty of two years in prison. However, the rapper received a suspended sentence, probation, and fines totaling about $1,300 to the victim plus their legal costs. A$AP Rocky has since performed in Sweden without issue.
