Selena Quintanilla Autopsy Report Revealed 30 Years After Death
Selena Quintanilla‘s autopsy report has been revealed three decades after the Tejano music superstar’s tragic death, offering new insights into the circumstances surrounding her murder in 1995.
The details have emerged alongside the release of Netflix’s new documentary Selena y Los Dinos: A Family Legacy, which explores the singer’s life and untimely passing (as per Rolling Stone).
The autopsy, conducted just three hours after Quintanilla’s death due to significant public interest, confirmed that the 23-year-old died from a bullet wound to her lower right shoulder. Coroner Lloyd White documented that her death resulted from “exsanguinating internal and external haemorrhage, in other words massive bleeding, due to a perforating gunshot wound of the thorax.”
According to the original 1995 report obtained by US Weekly, the bullet entered Quintanilla’s back, travelled through her ribs and the upper lobe of her lungs before exiting her body. The projectile severely damaged her subclavian artery, which proved fatal and contributed directly to her death from massive blood loss.
The shooting occurred at the hands of Yolanda Saldívar, the former president of Quintanilla’s fan club, in what became one of the most shocking crimes in music history. Saldívar claimed the gunshot was accidental and initially pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges. However, she was convicted in October 1995 and sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
Saldívar’s first opportunity for parole came earlier this year, but her request was denied. She will not be eligible to seek parole again until 2030, ensuring she remains incarcerated for at least five more years.
The Netflix documentary Selena y Los Dinos: A Family Legacy is a collaborative effort between Quintanilla’s husband Chris Pérez and her sister Suzette Quintanilla. Directed by Isabel Castro, the film presents previously unseen footage of the star’s life both before and after achieving fame, delving deeper into her legacy beyond the most widely known aspects of her story.
