Seth Avett Unveils New Solo Album ‘Feathe’ with Preview Singles “Education” and “It’s Natural”

Seth Avett has announced Feathe, a new solo studio album set to arrive on Sept. 5 via Ramseur Records/Thirty Tigers. With his fifth full-length release under the moniker Timothy Seth Avett as Darling, the co-lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for The Avett Brothers offers an immersive and eclectic reflection of his inner world, communicated through a dramatic sonic leap forward. To preview his bold new chapter, Avett has shared the eclectic advance singles “Education” and “It’s Natural” alongside home-spun music videos.

Feathe is Avett’s first solo offering since 2022’s Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown and his first album of original music since 2017’s IV. He wrote all 11 of the album’s tracks over that same period, documenting his philosophical development in fits and starts as he amassed real-life experience and landmark achievements with The Avett Brothers, including their 2024 self-titled reunion record and Swept Away, the Broadway musical inspired by their 2004 concept album Mignonette. It all comes pouring out in lines far removed from the sparse, tender indie-folk of his previous offerings: “Education” and “It’s Natural” are rich rambles of detail and punched-up wordplay that spin intimate recollections into vast universal truths.

Avett co-produced his solo return with Dana Nielsen, a longtime collaborator acclaimed for his work with The Avett Brothers, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, SZA, Neil Diamond and more. The duo recorded all of the album’s instrumentation together, meticulously assembling a rough-edged, beat-driven alternative Americana sound that smacks of the Dust Brothers’ hip-hop-inflected ‘90s work. Avett provides lead and backing vocals across the project, with occasional contributions from Charissa Nielsen and Jessica Lea Mayfield, with whom he recorded an Elliot Smith tribute record in 2015.
