Snoop Dogg Addresses Same-Sex Couple Remarks Amid Debate Over AFL Grand Final Booking
Snoop Dogg has addressed comments made about a same-sex couple in Lightyear, and the backlash that followed, as debate continues around his upcoming appearance at the AFL Grand Final.
The rapper commented on an Instagram made by Hollywood Unlocked this week, saying “my bad”. He said he was “caught off guard” when his grandson asked questions about two women raising a child in the film, and “had no answers” for him.
“All my gay friends [know] what’s up, they been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect,” he commented.
The apology follows criticism of remarks he made on the It’s Giving… Podcast, where he said the scene “threw [him] for a loop” and questioned whether kids’ films should include same-sex couples.
“I’m scared to go to the movies now,” Snoop said on the podcast. “Y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.”
In a since-deleted part, he said that the Lightyear scene “threw me for a loop,” adding, “I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Those comments drew immediate backlash, including from screenwriter Lauren Gunderson.
“I’m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love,” Gunderson wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. “I was one of a few writers they had on it over the years, which is very common for screenwriting of course. I had very little to do with the final script. But I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of shit for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists.”
The backlash has only intensified locally after Snoop Dogg was booked as the pre-game entertainer for this year’s AFL Grand Final, which kicks off September 27th.
The likes of Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young have called out the league for booking him, branding him a “slur merchant”.
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon has defended the decision to book Snoop.
