Spotify prepares to launch its own lyric translation tool, which the company has reportedly been testing for years.

Locked in seemingly eternal competition, Spotify and Apple Music are constantly trying to outdo one another as the top music streaming service. Apple launched its AutoMix function, and Spotify was quick to follow with its own audio-mixing tool. Now, signs point to Spotify testing another well-loved Apple Music feature—lyric translation.

Users on Reddit speculate that Spotify could be planning to roll out its own lyric translation tool, seeing signs of such when viewing the lyrics to Rosalía’s new album, LUX. That evidence comes hot on the heels of Apple Music’s free update that included the feature back in September. Since Spotify tends to release new features to limited markets initially, users in the U.S. will likely be the first to get access.

It’s worth noting that Spotify has been working on such a feature for at least four years, when another Reddit user noted a lyric translation button on certain non-English songs. In 2023, Spotify acknowledged that such a feature was “still being tested in selected countries.”

Now, Spotify has acknowledged the recent speculation with a statement to TechRadar—and confirmed that the feature is live in select markets.

“Rosalía’s album is among the first to feature lyrics translations in 13 different languages through Spotify’s expanded MusixMatch partnership. With the integration now live in key markets like the U.S. and Spain (as of November 7), listeners worldwide can instantly understand her lyrics, bridging the gap between her sound and global audience.”

Rosalía’s LUX debuted over the weekend and has been making headlines ever since. Already, the album has become Spotify’s most-streamed album by a Spanish-speaking female artist in a single day, beating out the previous record held by Karol G’s 2023 album.

LUX is a departure from Rosalía’s flamenco-inspired sound, and she recommended fans listen with headphones on in a dark room for the full effect.
