Over the weekend, The Allman Betts Band concluded its ninth annual Family Revival Tour by turning in two final stops: Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, and Sunday, Dec. 21, at San Francisco’s The Fillmore. Both concerts incorporated seismic moments that stirred homages to the bandleaders’ famous fathers, Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, through fitting song selections and high-profile guests who helped scorch each performance with a sense of dignity for the originals.

Saturday’s appearance in Los Angeles was fueled by a collective of chosen players who arrived onstage at various points throughout the night, accentuating select tracks with their independent skill sets. Jimmy Hall christened “Statesboro Blues,” followed by standard deliveries of “Blue Sky,” “Stand Back,” and “Come and Go Blues.” Judith Hill added guitar and vocals to “Ain’t Waistin’ Time No More,” before passing the baton to Christone “Kingfish” Ingram for a set-closing “Dreams.”

The blues guitarist returned during the concert’s second half for “Trouble No More,” before swapping places with Hill once again and welcoming Australian axe-slinger Orianthi to the mix on “Southbound.” Amanda Shires appeared on “Can You Fool,” adding fiddle to the tune and later returning to help close the frame on “Whipping Post.” The latter also involved second-generation great Dweezil Zappa, who, along with the rest of the night’s participants, contributed to “Midnight Rider,” which followed “Ramblin’ Man” with Jackie Greene and Cody Dickinson.

Similarly, the group’s final tour stop featured collaborative moments with Zappa, Luther and Cody Dickinson, Robert Randolph, Hall, Sierra Green, Roy Orbison Jr., and others, assisting Allman and Betts with a near-identical arrangement of material to the night prior. “No One Left to Run,” from Where It All Begins, was added to the first set and included Hall, Hill, and Randolph.

During the second set opener, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” Luther Dickinson lent his Memphis-informed style to the beloved instrumental. “Trouble No More” featured Randolph and Bella Rayne, the latter also sticking around for an ensuing take on “Southbound,” before trading places with Shires ahead of “Can You Fool.” “Melissa,” “Seven Turns,” and “End of the Line” filled out the set and kept the audience fixed to the band’s legacy, as did “Back Where It All Begins” and “Whipping Post,” featuring Shires, Zappa, and Dickinson.

Like the previous concert, the encore consisted of “Ramblin’ Man” with Greene, Orbison, and others, before the entire musical crew took the stage to close the night and tour with the crowd singing along to “Midnight Rider.”
