The Doors’ John Densmore and Robby Krieger Tap Lukas Nelson, Sierra Ferrell, Don Was and More for “Riders on the Storm” Recording

As The Doors’ 60th anniversary celebration continues, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore have renewed their band’s immortal legacy with a star-studded new recording of their classic “Riders on the Storm.”

In partnership with Playing for Change, as part of the organization’s Songs Around the World covers series, the legendary ‘60s rock outfit’s surviving guitarist and drummer have reunited to lead a company of 14 other contributors from around the world to bring new life to the 1971 L.A. Woman hit. Lukas Nelson and Sierra Ferrell alternate lead vocals with Jim Morrison’s original recording, with Don Was adding bass, Micah Nelson on harmonica and Foo Fighters’ Rami Jaffee on keyboards.

“Vocally, Lukas Nelson filled Jim Morrison’s leather pants quite well!” Densmore expressed, per Rolling Stone. “Ray would be proud of the way Rami Jaffee ‘channeled’ the piano solo. Mark Johnson masterminded a beautiful video.”

“Seeing musicians from different cultures come together around this song means a lot,” Krieger said. “Playing for Change is doing important work to unite people across the globe.”

“Much has been said about the poetic side of the Doors,” Was observed. “However, I can also testify to the depth of their swing and the swagger of their pocket. John and Robby’s groove is the secret sauce of their success.”

Other contributors to the reimagining of “Riders on the Storm” include Aaron White (vocals), Izzana Jaa (vocals), William Barton (didgeridoo), Erik Prevost David (trumpet), Boboulaye Sissokho (kora), Macarena Montesinos (cello), Guarani Andeva Group (percussion), Ezequiel Acosta (bandoneón), and the Iron Cult Dancers.
