The String Cheese Incident Dance The Night Away At Hulaween

The String Cheese Incident hosted their annual Suwannee Hulaween festival in Live Oak, Fla. this past weekend, playing three nights of music to their colorful conspirators.

Last year there was no pagan pageantry to be had, as the festival was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Thankfully this year, things went off without a hitch and fans were grateful to bust loose after being cooped up for so long.

The band’s first outing – Oct. 29 – was a joyous reunion marked by two sets of classic Cheese, with Rhonda Thomas and Tony White sitting in on “Sweet Spot” and “Let’s Go Outside.”

Night two – Oct. 30 – saw the unveiling of this year’s ‘themed set’, as per Halloween tradition, and it seems to have been just what the doctor ordered. The band explained that they figured what the people needed most was an antidote to these dark times, so rather than delving into spookiness, they proceeded to play a set of entirely dance-themed songs, kicking things off with the classic David Bowie number “Let’s Dance.”

From there they treated fans to a plethora of covers – from Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” to KC and The Sunshine Band’s “I’m Your Boogie Man,” to Daft Punk’s “Just Dance” and “Lose Yourself To Dance.” They closed out the dance party with Elton John’s “Hold Me Closer Tiny Dancer.”

On night three they delivered a notably poignant set of music, highlighted by a stand-out “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” with Sierra Hull and members of her band sitting in.
