The String Cheese Incident Debut Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”

On Thursday, May 15, The String Cheese Incident returned to the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in Wilmington, N.C., for their second and final stand at the venue during this run of live dates. The night was marked by a first-time complete cover of Bob Dylan’s famed “Like a Rolling Stone.” Notably, during the band’s June 21, 2000, performance at the Navy Pier in Chicago, Bill Nershi sang only the first verse of Dylan’s classic during their own “Shaking the Tree.” Last night’s debut officially served as a welcomed addition to the band’s repertoire.

Prior to the arrival of the night’s debut cover, SCI flowed through originals, “Eye Know Why,” “Cedar Laurels,” and “Sometimes a River” before bumping into the Dylan original. SCI’s take on the 1965 Highway 61 Revisited inclusion prompted a segue into a rarity, “Xai Xai (SKAT),” for a nonstop movement through two numbers. They capped the pairing with a stand-alone “Siren,” before the arrival of another borrowed tune, this time Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).”

Before closing the night’s initial set, SCI merged their Speaking in Tongues pull into “One Step Closer.” On the other side of set break, the band returned and offered a series of originals, “Roll Around the Sun” before “Enjoy the Ride” into “Can’t Stop Now.” The group paused ahead of “Eventually,” and once again before “Hi Ho No Snow,” before one final pairing: “Jellyfish” into “Shine.”

“Restless Wind” was the concert encore and the final number before SCI returns to the stage tonight in Raleigh, N.C. Tickets remain on sale.
