The Weeknd’s hit ‘Blinding Lights’ becomes the first song in Spotify history to reach five billion streams.
The Weeknd’s 2019 hit, “Blinding Lights,” has officially become the most-streamed track in Spotify history, reaching a whopping five billion streams. That follows the song’s addition to Billboard’s Top Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs of the 21st Century chart.
“On August 31st, 2025, The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ became the first song to reach 5 billion streams on Spotify,” Spotify announced on social media over the weekend.
The 35-year-old artist, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, celebrated the achievement with a repost of Spotify’s announcement on his Instagram Stories. Currently, The Weeknd is wrapping up his “After Hours Til Dawn Stadium Tour,” which kicked off in May and is expected to finish on September 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
“Blinding Lights” was the second single from The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours. The song was an instant hit upon its November 2019 release and dominated Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for four weeks. It also maintained a spot in the top 10 for a whole year—the first song to do so.
Two years later, it surpassed Chubby Checker’s 1958 dance anthem, “The Twist,” on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Hot 100 chart, yet another record-breaking accomplishment. In January last year, “Blinding Lights” also became the first song to reach four billion streams on Spotify.
“I’ll never stop being humbled by anything I create making its way to millions of people, let alone billions!” said The Weeknd at the time. “I’m so thankful this song makes people feel a way that they keep going back to listen.”
Altogether, The Weeknd has 28 songs on Spotify’s Billions Club playlist—more than any other artist on the highly coveted list. Interestingly, despite the track’s success, “Blinding Lights” never earned the star a Grammy, or even a nomination. But it secured him several trophies at the MTV Video Music Awards, the iHeartRadio Music Awards, and the Billboard Music Awards.
