Last night, Dec. 29, Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros. commenced the first of three nights on stage at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The New Year’s run began with a solo Weir stepping out to cover The Platters’ “Twilight Time.” The musician’s acoustic offering ended a 10-year gap in live performances, having been last played on June 29, 2013–prior to Friday evening’s bust out.
With the arrival of ensuing material, the stage swelled with added players: An approach Weir and company tried out during their latest Capitol Theatre run in Port Chester, N.Y. From a solo start, the band expanded to a three-piece for their delivery of Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me,” adding more players with the arrival of follow-up songs: “Big River,” “Catfish John,” and “Jack Straw.”
Weir plucked a pair of songs from his RatDog catalog before “Good Lovin’” cascaded into a set break. Upon their return for the second half of the night, things heated back up on “Me and Bobby McGee” and continued to simmer on “Playing in the Band.” A classic pairing of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” preluded a layered display of “Terrapin Station,” presented in complete form, not robbed of transit, siding, or flyer.
The robust build gave way to a charged performance of “Throwing Stones” before the latter frame came to a close following the band’s take on “Not Fade Away.” Weir & Wolf Bros. returned to the stage for their encore, coalescing on a heartfelt “Ripple.”
With night one in the books, Weir and his band will return to the Sunshine State location to continue his New Year’s stand tonight, Dec. 30. Tickets are sold out. For those interested in streaming the concert, packages are available via FANS.live.
