Last night, May 29, Umphrey’s McGee ushered in the latest chapter of their post-Kris Myers era, welcoming interim drummer Duane Trucks for his first gig in support of the band. The move came about after Myers announced his departure, turning in his drumsticks after 22 years of service with the veteran jam ensemble on May 13. Subsequently, Umphrey’s McGee announced that Scotty Zwang and Trucks would assume the coveted seat behind the kit for the remainder of the calendar year.
Sticking to the plan, the band arrived at the Vinyl Music Hall in Pensacola, Fla., for their first night with Trucks, who kept count on all but “Believe the Lie,” which included former live collaborator and the evening’s stand-in, Tanner Bardin, on drums. Before the entry above, which assumed the sixth slot during set one, the band focused on fusion–an instrumental interplay that flexed their earned chops–across “Domino Theory,” followed by a nonstop sequence of “Resolution” into “Half Delayed.”
From the It’s Not Us cut, the band seized an entry into “Piranhas,” paired with “Night Nurse.” The aforementioned moves preluded Bardin’s welcome. After the guest’s exit, Trucks resumed his role in support of “Wizard Burial Ground,” which effectively closed the initial set. The concert’s second half produced mostly originals, except for a cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind staple, “In Bloom.”
During the night’s encore, the ensemble and their new timekeeper turned over “Passing,” before ending on Al Green’s “Take Me to the River,” which represented a bust out, last played by Umphrey’s McGee on June 22, 2019, ending a 415 show lapse since it was last performed.
After last night’s concert, the band will proceed to Orlando, Fla., this evening, May 30. Tickets remain on sale. For those unable to attend and interested in streaming the concert, visit nugs.net.
