On Thursday, May 15, Willie Nelson’s traveling Outlaw Music Festival arrived at its second location, North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, Calif. During the San Diego County stop, Billy Strings was joined by longtime pal, fellow bluegrass torchbearer and event participant, Sierra Hull, for a three song sit in that succeeded a first time original performed by Strings, Thursday night’s debut of “10,000 Miles From A Friend,” was delivered solo.

Prior to Hull’s arrival or even the night’s first-time play, Strings and his instrumental support system found their footing on the traditional “Sally Goodin” before inserting the original “Slow Train” again from The Osborne Brothers’ released “Ruby.” Seemingly nodding to particular eras of his career, Strings pulled from Home by performing “Away from the Mire,” Highway Prayers on “Be Your Man,” and his own self-titled EP with “Thirst Mutilator,” equipped with a tease of Judy Garland’s “If I Only Had a Brain.”

The ensemble proceeded with “Dust in a Baggie,” without pause, breaking away from the foundation of “Thirst Mutilator,” to forge a pairing that came before a nod to Blaze Goley on “Cold Cold World.” The aforementioned number kicked off a short series of Strings solos, piqued with the arrival of a debut, “10,000 Miles From A Friend.” “This song kept me up all night,” Strings said while tuning, “It’s fresh from the oven.” Watch below.

Following the sweet acoustics of the musician’s new song, he welcomed his band back and Hull to the stage to add mandolin on “Southern Flavor,” which reached an instrumental high-point during a string crashing face-off between Hull and Jarrod Walker. With all members and the guest on stage, the group carved out a finale by positioning “Psycho” before “Meet Me at the Creek.” The songs were performed one after another, without rest for a full-throttle finish.
