On Wednesday, September 24, Goose returned to the Louisville Palace Theatre to complete their stage time in Louisville, Ky. The foursome’s second night at the historic venue functioned like an explanation mark at the end of a sentence, delineating the rousing nature of the concert’s final moments, which were shared with local My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James.
Before their guest arrived, Goose christened their stage time with the funky and exploratory pacesetter “Jive II,” and let follow-up “Atlas Dogs” determine the speed of the tempo and evolve into a deep jam that would eventually birth “Earthling or Alien?” The unrelenting course of material brought forth “Turned Clouds,” which seamlessly arrived in the queue.
The first set brought forth the Everything Must Go cut, “How It Ends,” before the group seized the remainder of “Slow Ready,” filling the gaps that they had left unfinished during the onset of the number, which began during night one in Louisville, Tuesday, Sept. 23. Like the initial treatment they gave “Slow Ready,” Goose did the same to “Arrow,” during the onset of the second set, letting the track remain incomplete before jumping to the next.
After turning in “Rosewood Heart,” Goose covered The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows,” which merged into an ensuing “Dripfield.” With one slot remaining during the set, the band welcomed James and honored his influence by submitting their guest’s own “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” Goose first covered the track on September 17, 2020, performing it a total of 11 times before last night’s rendition, which brought the total to an even dozen.
James led the lyrics, with Rick Mitarotonda lending a proverbial hand, and the rest of the band demonstrating their comfort and familiarity with the composition, engaged and enthralled by the fan favorite. The audience’s applause called all five artists back for another number, which emerged as the evening’s encore, a cover of The Band’s “Don’t Do It,” which recalled memories of James’ time opening for Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramblers, and subsequent 2010 sit-in.
