Watch: Hunter Root Previews New LP ‘Crooked Home’ with First Single and Official Music Video “’94”

Keystone State multi-instrumentalist Hunter Root has announced the October 17 release of his new album, the gritty and emotionally infused Crooked Home, via Tolok. Paired with today’s promise of an impending batch of music is the first single and official music video for “‘94,” a personal retelling of youthful experiences and tough topics like losing his brother, who faced cancer and heroin addiction. 

The collection was produced by Swedish-born, New Orleans mainstay, Anders Osborne, and engineered by David Kalmusky at Nashville’s Addiction Studios. Across the collection, Root blurs the line between unabashed honesty and heart-tugging confidentiality. “The songs weren’t written to deliver a message,” says Root. “They’re simply confessions set to music.

Crooked Home serves as the follow-up to Root’s 2023 release, Arkansas. The latest set pulls in guest appearances from drummer Chad Cromwell (Neil Young, Mark Knopfler), bassists and keyboard player Marc Rogers, and Music City songstress Lindsay Lou, on two tracks. 

As the debut preview of the forthcoming album, “‘94,” presents the challenges Root faced during his adolescence, the death of a sibling, chronic pain stemming from Lyme disease, and tales of the childhood obstacles of bottle-tilting parents, picked up via the lines; “Back in 1994 / Glad I woke up but I didn’t wake up too sure / Back in 1993 / The devil made his way inside a kid and then he never broke free…” 

Crooked Home marks a new chapter for Root, who has dug deeper and reached a new level of personal reflection on the 12-track set.
