Watch: Jeff Tweedy Sings “Jesus, Etc.” During Restaurant Karaoke as “El Jefe”

Jeff Tweedy has made a debut under a new name. The Wilco frontman and principal lyricist participated in restaurant karaoke under the title “El Jefe.” In a video shared on the musician’s wife, Susan’s, social media page, the reputable singer delivered the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot fan favorite, “Jesus, Etc,” at what appears to be an outdoor restaurant in Mexico. 

The clip begins with the karaoke jockey calling Tweedy up to sing his choice number:  “OK, El Jefe… El Jefe is next.” The camera pans to a sandy walkway, where a seemingly incognito Tweedy, wearing an orange baseball cap, walks onto the scene and reaches for the microphone. In a lighthearted exchange, the host demonstrates how to hold the mic, adding “Just don’t yell in the microphone…” Tweedy smiles with a suspected sense of knowing he’s flying under the radar. 

While fellow patrons maintain their dinner-side conversations, perhaps not fully grasping the intimacy and speciality of the performance, Tweedy, one hand in his pocket, sings the track, widely considered the centerpiece of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and a two-decade-and-counting concert staple. 

Notably, Wilco wrapped up their destination concert event, Sky Blue Sky, on Sunday, Jan. 18, delivering a litany of classics and rarities, while welcoming fellow participating acts [and taking part in sets] Yo La Tengo, Golden Smog, Waxahatchee, Dr. Dog, MJ Lenderman, Valarie June, and others.
