Last night, Widespread Panic kicked off their three-night run in Huntsville, Ala. Their performance took place at the recently opened 8,000 capacity Orion Amphitheater, which will continue to be their home in the South through the weekend.

Widespread Panic opened the show with a cover of Neil Young’s iconic 1989 ode to The Greatest Country in the World “Rockin’ In The Free World.” The audience was immediately tuned in and turned up and Widespread Panic kept that energy flowing with “Coconut.” Next, they jammed from “Holden Oversoul” into “Little Lilly” into, a nod to Alabama, “Cotton Was King.” Next, they played gold standard bluesman Junior Kimbrough’s eponymous song “Junior.” They jammed from “Pleas” > “Worry” > “Big Wooly Mammoth” to close the first set.

The band opened their second set with “Dyin’ Man” and wasted no time getting into rock and roll jams. After a cover of Bukka White’s “Fixin’ To Die” Widespread Panic jammed from “Mercy” into “Jam” into a cover of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West.” They continued to segue: Next came “Machine” into “Barstools and Dreamers” into “Chilly Water” into “Drums which had a “Chilly Water” reprise and “Barstools and Dreamers” reprise. Widespread closed the show with a cover of Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee.”

After a brief break, Widespread Panic returned for a three-track encore. They started with the inspiring cover of Roebuck “Pops” Staples’ “Hope In A Hopeless World” which was followed by brute.’s “Expiration Day.” Finally, the show came to a close with their classic 1986 track “Pigeons.” Widespread Panic will play at The Orion Amphitheater again tonight.
