ARIA’s New-Look Charts Are Here
It’s a new-look ARIA Chart, but some familiar faces are on top.
As previously reported, the trade body has revamped its ARIA Main Charts (Singles and Albums) and the Australian Artist Singles and Albums Charts, which now exclude titles released more than two years ago.
Catalogue isn’t banished. Those older favourites now appear on the ARIA On Replay Charts.
Today’s charts are the first to implement those new rules.
American pop star Sabrina Carpenter nabs a piece of history as Man’s Best Friend blasts to the albums summit, while KPop Demon Hunters hit “Golden” retains the singles crown.
Man’s Best Friend is Carpenter’s seventh studio LP and the follow-up to Short N’ Sweet, which logged 13 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 over the past year. At the same time, Short N’ Sweet lifts 12-6 on the weekly tally.
Completing the podium, respectively, is the original soundtrack for the Netflix film Kpop Demon Hunters and Stray Kids’ KARMA.
The top ranked homegrown title on the ARIA Album Chart, published late Friday, September 5th, belongs to The Wolfe Brothers as Australian Made powers to No. 9. It’s the seventh studio album from Tom and Nick Wolfe and their fifth consecutive top 10 album, ARIA reports.
Australian country act Hayley Jensen’s Country Soul arrives at No. 14, for a new career high, beating the No. 25 for 2021’s Breakin’ Hearts. It’s one of five Australian albums in the current ARIA Top 50.
Speaking at BIGSOUND earlier in the week, ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd said the albums chart would reflect the most change, and she wasn’t wrong.
Under the new system, the albums tally welcomes 17 new entries and 45 re-entries to the top 100, while only 38 titles continue into this chart from last week.
“We did it because we want dynamism back in the chart,” Herd explained to the industry during a Tuesday panel discussion. “We want it to be exciting for the public to check this out. We want to give artists tools to be able to promote their music and to hold up a lovely red No. 1 on the Australian charts or you, or No. 1 on the main chart. It’s a really great opportunity for an artists and their team to get out there and say, ‘oh my God look at our success’. We want people to do that.”
Over on the ARIA Singles Chart, “Golden” from the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack extends its reign to six straight weeks. It’s now tied with PSY’s 2012 smash “Gangnam Style” as the longest running leader by a Korean artist.
Carpenter’s “Tears” drops in at No. 3 for the top debut on the ARIA Singles Chart, one that doesn’t include any Australian recordings.
