PREMIERE: Platonic Sex Run Amok in the Video for Scuzzy New Single ‘Melon’

Brisbane/Meanjin indie rock crew Platonic Sex released the single ‘Melon’, the third chapter in a trilogy of singles, on Friday, 3rd November. The fuzzy, excitable power pop song follows previous singles ‘Bitch in the Heat’ and ‘When I Come Home, I’ll Find A Hill To Die On’. All three tracks were recorded with producer Bonnie Knight.

Music Feeds is premiering the official music video for ‘Melon’, a song that vocalist Bridget Brandolini has described as a therapeutic “conversation with myself.” Photographer Kyle Dobie directed the video, which was shot on Kodak 16mm 250D film and Super 8 50D and 200T. Watch it below.

Brandolini and their bandmates, percussionist Ryan Hammermeister, guitarist Jane Millroy and bass player Mikki Hain, will toast the trilogy of singles with a headline show at Brisbane’s Black Bear Lodge on Friday, 10th November. Eaglemont and Tamara & the Dreams are lined up as supports. Tickets on sale here.

In a statement, Brandolini elaborated on how writing the lyrics for ‘Melon’ was a therapeutic exercise. “I experience impulsive, anxious and scattered thoughts, but I’m checking in with my body to see where those emotions sit,” they said. “If I need to process something that’s going on in my life and I’m putting it off, the emotion will show up in unexpected ways, like road rage! Like, is it really about the traffic? Lol, I don’t think so.”

As for the song’s high-tempo, distorted sonic character, Brandolini said they were influenced by Amyl and the Sniffers. “The main riff in ‘Melon’ popped into my head while I was driving to rehearsal one afternoon listening to Amyl and The Sniffers,” they said. “I remember telling the band we had to write something with this new riff because I loved it so much.”
