moe. Run Through Debuts and Dust Offs on NYE

On Dec. 31, moe. completed their New Year’s Eve run at the Kodak Center in Rochester, N.Y., where they put forth a career-spanning display that ebbed and flowed through a trio of sets that touched various corners of their discography.
To start off the night, moe. tapped into an acoustic-driven first set. In honor of the season, they led with a first-time cover of the Frank Loesser-penned classic “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” During the tune, Derhak sang the lyrics, with piano accompaniment by Nate Wilson, while the rest of the band sat around a fireplace positioned on the stage.
For the remainder of the initial frame, Schnier and Garvey used acoustic guitars as they interspersed numbers from their own discography paired with two covers: Blind Faith’s 1969 hit “Can’t Find My Way Home” and Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song.” The aforementioned Reckoning cut represented only the second time since moe. debuted it in 2017.
Upon their return to the stage, moe. launched into their second set and dove deeper into their discography with a string of songs kept on rotation during their 2023 Fall Tour. The segment brought forth material like 2010’s “Puebla,” as well as older cuts such as “Sensory Deprivation Bank,” released in 1999.
Set three started with a cover of the scathing, high-energy Led Zeppelin tune “Immigrant Song.” They then proceeded to dust off “Paper Dragon,” which they haven’t played since March 2019. Then, the band members delivered “Bat Country.” The Dec. 31 run-through represented only the fourth time the song had been performed since debuting in October 2023.
The band closed out their holiday affair with renditions of “Blue Jeans Pizza” and “Lazarus,” as well as balloons and costumes to cheering audiences. Following the concert, tragedy struck outside the venue when a Ford Expedition crashed into a Mitsubishi Outlander, leading to the death of two people and leaving five injured.
In response to the devastating event, the band posted a statement on social media addressing what happened in hopes of healing. Read more.
