On August 8, Neil Young and his Chrome Hearts Band arrived at PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, N.C., for the first in a series of U.S. appearances as part of their ongoing Love Earth World Tour. The initial night in the States came to be after the band turned in a full slate of European concerts, making headlines for reviving select songs from Young’s catalog of originals. In line with the European setlist standard, the ensemble provided their Tar Heel State audience with two tour debuts during Friday’s return.

Young, leading a band comprised of Spooner Oldham, Micah Nelson, Corey McCormick, and Anthony LoGerfo, carved out the night’s access via 1974’s On the Beach feature, “Ambulance Blues,” before charging into a classic rendition of “Cowgirl in the Sand,” and Glendale cut “Be The Rain.” The group settled on an offering of “When You Dance, I Can Really Love” before the pulse of “Fuckin’ Up” escalated the tempo.

The single set performance saw the band lean into a regional feature of their bandleader’s songbook on “Southern Man,” which preluded the initial tour debut, Young’s soft pick up of his Harvest Moon promise, “One of These Days.” The last time the group performed the sweet feature was during their Capitol Theatre run in Port Chester, N.Y., on Sept. 23 and 24, 2024, meaning its reemergence during the band’s U.S. return arrived under a new touring cycle, representing a first addition for this grouping of concerts.

Keeping with the mellow offerings, “Harvest Moon” was next on the list and continued with “Daddy Went Walkin’.” Taking the concert’s tenth slot was a tender revival of “New Mama,” the group’s second tour debut of the night, and lauded Tonight’s The Night feature, inspired by the birth of his son Zeke. The last time Young took on the number was during his participation in the LA’s The Roxy’s 50th Anniversary benefit concert, on Sept. 20, 2023. Its arrival concluded a nearly two-year block in performances.

Following the second and final tour debut, the group assembled the final lineup of songs: “Looking Forward,” “Sun Green,” “Love and Only Love,” and “Hey Hey, My My.” Upon completion of the final four tracks, the band ushered in the night’s initial encore, which took shape as “Like a Hurricane,” “Name of the Game,” and “Old Man.” And still, the band had one left, performed a second encore, this one solely comprised of a protest anthem, and politically charged, “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
