Tedeschi Trucks Band Welcome Warren Haynes on Covers of The Allman Brothers Band and The Beatles in Toronto, Gov’t Mule Announce Halloween Theme

Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gov’t Mule arrived in Toronto on Wednesday, September 3, for the first in a series of September co-bills. Last night’s concert on the Budweiser Stage included separate sets from each of the respective bands, and a collaboration between the husband and wife-led ensemble and Warren Haynes, who fused their musical histories on The Allman Brothers Band’s Eat a Peach cut, “Stand Back,” and The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” in the arrangement of Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen. 

Before the concert’s collaborative conclusion, Gov’t Mule commenced the night with a frame that featured lauded covers like The Staple Singers’ “Hammer and Nails,” and a Heavy Load Blues inclusion, the Ann Peebles-penned “I Feel Like Breaking Up Someone’s Home.” In the mix was a heap of originals, including Haynes’ mid-‘90s Allman Brothers Band staple, “Soulshine.” 

The group struck a balance by administering a mix of material from records like The Deep End, Vol. 1 and 2, Peace… Like a River, Dose, and their 1995 self-titled debut, which effectively showcased their fluency in personally penned entries. Following a similar path as the band before them, Tedeschi Trucks Band pulled in covers from Derek and the Dominos (“Keep On Growing”), Prince (“1999”), Mike Reid (“I Can’t Make You Love Me”), among a slate of material off of Made Up Mind, Let Me Get By, and Revelator. 

The second-to-last and final song of the night saw Haynes on stage with his longtime collaborators and former Allman Brothers bandmate, Trucks. The guitarists paid homage to a specific era of their careers on the Gregg Allman-scribed “Stand Back,” before closing out the night after coming together and sharing in a crowd-rousing take on “With a Little Help From My Friends.”

Before last night’s concert, Gov’t Mule unveiled additional details about their Mule-O-Ween gigs on Friday, Oct. 31, in Washington, D.C., and Saturday, November 1, in Philadelphia, where they will evoke an Aerosmith theme, which, according to their post on Instagram, offers, “two nights filled with Sweet Emotion and plenty of deep cuts from one of rock & roll’s most iconic catalogs—reimagined, stretched out, and Mule-ified in ways only this band can deliver.”

Following Gov’t Mule and Tedeschi Trucks Band’s joint appearance in Toronto, they will continue on the road, performing tomorrow, Friday, September 5, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Tickets remain on sale.
